Positive Feedback Discounting as Nourishment-Refusal Wrong Attractor: The Threat-Based Discounting Architecture, Affirmation-Hunger Basin, and the Return to Receivable Affirmation

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Positive feedback discounting — the chronic pattern of systematically invalidating, minimizing, or deflecting positive feedback, compliments, and affirmation through threat-based discounting mechanisms that prevent positive input from nourishing the self — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_PFD in the landscape of receivable affirmation. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as receivable affirmation: the capacity to genuinely receive positive feedback — allowing it to land, be integrated, and nourish the self-concept — while maintaining appropriate critical judgment about accuracy and relevance.

W_PFD is rigorously distinguished from appropriate modesty, healthy humility, accurate self-assessment correcting inflated praise, and appropriate skepticism about manipulative flattery. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: threat-based discounting (positive feedback is processed through a threat filter that systematically generates invalidating interpretations — they are just being nice, they do not know the real me, it was luck — converting potential affirmation into evidence of the discounter's invisibility; D(ξ) is generated by positive feedback that cannot be deflected), consistency maintenance (the self-concept requires coherence; positive feedback that contradicts the negative self-model must be discarded to preserve internal consistency), and the affirmation hunger loop (discounting creates chronic affirmation deficit which paradoxically increases the need for external validation while decreasing the capacity to receive it).

The Nourishment Paradox is central: positive feedback discounting reliably produces the affirmation hunger it is organized to manage — by systematically preventing positive input from nourishing the self, the discounter maintains the depleted self-concept that makes external validation feel urgently necessary. Nine formal propositions characterize the receivable affirmation ground state, the nourishment-refusal wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the nourishment paradox, developmental roots in conditional regard environments, and return paths through IFS inner critic work, self-compassion, schema therapy for defectiveness beliefs, and graduated affirmation integration practice.
