Relational Contempt as Partner-Dehumanization Wrong Attractor: The Superior-Judge Architecture, Condescension Basin, and the Return to Respectful Equality

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · partner-dehumanization wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Relational contempt — the chronic posture of superiority, disdain, and moral dismissal directed toward an intimate partner — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_RC in the landscape of respectful equality. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as respectful equality: the capacity to see a partner as a peer — imperfect but fundamentally worthy of respect, whose perspective deserves genuine consideration.

W_RC is rigorously distinguished from appropriate disappointment, legitimate anger (which retains the other's humanity), healthy standards, and justified relational exit. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: superiority consolidation (contempt requires a stable hierarchy — the contemner maintains a felt sense of being fundamentally better; every interaction is filtered through this hierarchy; D(ξ) is generated by any evidence of the partner's competence or equality), the dehumanization loop (as contempt consolidates, the partner is increasingly perceived not as a full person but as a category of deficiency, making repair nearly impossible — one cannot genuinely reconnect with someone one has ceased to see as fully human), and superiority-as-identity (the contemner's self-concept becomes organized around being above the partner; the relationship is partly maintained because the partner's perceived inferiority is necessary for the contemner's sense of adequacy, making genuine equality threatening).

The Superiority Paradox is central: relational contempt reliably produces the inadequacy and disconnection it is organized to defend against — the contemner who requires a diminished partner for their own adequacy is dependent on that diminishment, revealing rather than concealing their own fragility. Nine formal propositions characterize the respectful equality ground state, the partner-dehumanization wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the superiority paradox, developmental roots in shame-organized families, and return paths through Gottman couples therapy, EFT, and self-compassion.
