Schooling as Displacement Factory: Compulsory Education, the Curriculum Glitch, and the Ground State of Learning

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · displacement factory

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Children are learning organisms. Their ground state is curiosity—undirected, intrinsically motivated, high-bandwidth acquisition of competence in domains that interest them. The school as currently institutionalized does not serve this ground state: it serves a different function—producing standardized workers, instilling obedience, sorting by compliance—and in doing so generates substantial displacement D() in the children it processes.

We apply the Displacement Framework to the institution of compulsory schooling. We distinguish the ground state of learning from the institution of schooling, derive the Schooling Glitch (G_school: the gap between stated function and actual function), document evidence of displacement across six dimensions (motivation, anxiety, sleep, movement, autonomy, and social structure), analyze credential inflation as a pure positional Glitch, and identify return paths through self-directed learning, outdoor education, and school structure reform.

The formal analysis recovers what Illich, Gatto, Holt, and Gray argued by other means: the institution called “school” is not optimized for learning, and optimizing for learning requires dismantling or fundamentally restructuring the institution.
