Secondary shame — shame about experiencing shame — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_SS in the landscape of simple witness. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as simple witness: the capacity to notice shame arising without amplification, without shame about having it, with neither suppression nor rumination. W_SS is rigorously distinguished from appropriate embarrassment, guilt, and healthy humility.
Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: double displacement and recursive wrapping (primary shame produces secondary shame about having that shame response — the meta-layer treats the primary shame as itself shameful, generating additional D(ξ) at the meta level, compounding total displacement cost), the concealment imperative (secondary shame demands hiding not just the original trigger but the shame response itself, layering concealment that forecloses the disclosure allowing shame to process and dissipate), and the help-seeking shame loop (seeking support for shame triggers shame about needing help — a recursive trap in which the individual who most needs to process shame is prevented from seeking the relational contact that would allow processing).
The Recursion Paradox is central: secondary shame makes primary shame inaccessible to processing by wrapping it in additional layers — the processing of shame is prevented by the shame of having shame to process. Nine formal propositions characterize the simple witness ground state, the meta-shame wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the recursion paradox, developmental roots in shaming environments, and return paths through CFT, mindfulness, and shame resilience.
