Status anxiety — the chronic preoccupation with social rank, fear of status loss, and compulsive prestige-seeking — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_SA in the landscape of self-determined worth. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as self-determined worth: grounding one's sense of value in intrinsic sources — chosen values, authentic achievement, relational depth — rather than in rank relative to others.
W_SA is constituted by the rank-worth equation: worth is indexed to rank, which is inherently relative and therefore can never be permanently secured. Two primary mechanisms maintain the basin: the social comparison treadmill (status gains provide only temporary relief because the comparison set shifts upward with each achievement) and the positional goods paradox (goods that derive their value from their scarcity cannot provide general satisfaction because general attainment destroys their positional value).
Drawing on de Botton, Veblen, Bourdieu, Leary's sociometer theory, and Wilkinson and Pickett's inequality research, nine formal propositions characterize the rank-worth trap, the comparison treadmill, the positional goods paradox, the inequality amplifier, social media as industrial rank-making infrastructure, physiological costs of status threat, distinctions from narcissism and social defeat syndrome, and return paths through self-determination theory.
