The Infant as Epistemic Ground: Pre-Linguistic Prosody, Authentic Signal Detection, and the Displacement Before Language

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · epistemic ground

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

The infant is the organism before language installed its corruptions. Infant prosody is the purest form of displacement signaling: the infant cannot lie, cannot perform, cannot fake—the cry carries exact information of the displacement. This makes the infant a calibration device for adult empathy, activating the most accurate empathic response by bypassing cognitive filtering that social performance installs.

We contrast with adult corruptions: fake sympathy (prosodic performance of care without insular activation), false pair-clinging (bonding-performance driven by fear rather than genuine relational ground state fit), and linguistic lies (adult language allows sign to detach from signified; infant prosody cannot). We cover infant cry acoustics (fundamental frequency, cry types), motherese, oxytocin release in response to infant cues, the still face paradigm (Tronick), mirror neuron activation for infant distress, and why infant cries bypass cortical filtering and hit the amygdala directly.

The return to authentic signaling is the return to what the infant knew.
