Masculinity is a diverse, adaptive set of cultural practices and identities. Toxic masculinity is a specific wrong attractor W_toxic_masc — a constrictive gender-role configuration that systematically prohibits emotional vulnerability, mandates dominance and control, and organizes male identity around the suppression of traits coded as feminine. We apply the Displacement Framework to formalize toxic masculinity.
The integrated manhood ground state S0_integrated is defined as the capacity to be strong AND emotionally present, with Levant and Richmond's integrated masculinity ideology allowing emotional expressivity, relational depth, and vulnerability alongside strength. W_toxic_masc is a negational wrong attractor — organized around what must NOT be expressed (vulnerability, tenderness, fear, need) rather than positive values — maintained through two interlocking mechanisms: the vulnerability prohibition (Levant's normative male alexithymia: men socialized into emotional inexpressivity develop reduced capacity to identify emotions; Brown 2010 — vulnerability's prohibition structurally prevents intimacy) and the dominance imperative (Connell 1995 hegemonic masculinity: power, control, and the subordination of women and non-hegemonic men).
Nine formal propositions cover: S0_integrated as integrated manhood (P1), W_toxic_masc as constricted-self wrong attractor with Brannon's four commandments (P2), the vulnerability prohibition and normative male alexithymia (P3), the dominance imperative and intimate partner violence (P4), homophobia as boundary enforcement maintaining the vulnerability prohibition (P5), mental health costs including masked depression and higher male suicide rates (P6), cultural and racial variation with intersectionality (P7), cumulative Phi_toxic_masc across psychological, relational, somatic, and social domains (P8), and return paths including men's work, vulnerability cultivation, and psychotherapy adapting to masculine socialization barriers (P9).
