Trauma is distinguished from ordinary stress by a single structural feature: the return path is broken. We apply the displacement framework to trauma, identifying the pre-trauma ground state () and analyzing the mechanisms by which traumatic displacement becomes irreversible. Three compounding mechanisms are identified: (1) allostatic shift --- the baseline recalibrates around the trauma, so the original is no longer the system's reference point; (2) the intrusion loop --- fragments of the traumatic event are re-experienced as present displacement, reaccumulating from within; and (3) the freeze attractor --- the nervous system finds a wrong attractor (hypervigilance or dissociation) that is stable under traumatized dynamics but incompatible with ordinary life.
By DC5 (irreversibility), the cost of return from entrenched trauma exceeds the cost of early intervention by a structural margin. We propose that trauma treatment is fundamentally a problem of path reconstruction: the return path to must be rebuilt, not merely cleared. This reframing unifies somatic, cognitive, and relational approaches to trauma under a single cost-theoretic account.
