Triangulation as Conflict-Mediation Wrong Attractor: The Third-Party Routing Architecture, Indirect-Engagement Basin, and the Return to Direct Relational Contact

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Triangulation — the process of managing two-person relational tension by routing it through a third party — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_TR in the landscape of direct relational contact. Following Bowen Family Systems Theory, the paper formalizes how two-person systems under tension draw in a third person to stabilize the dyad, transferring anxiety the original dyad cannot process directly.

The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as direct relational contact: the capacity to engage directly with the person one is in conflict with, processing relational tension in the two-person system where it arose. Five triangulation forms are characterized and analyzed: gossip triangulation (venting about A to C rather than addressing A), coalition triangulation (recruiting C against A), family scapegoating (attributing system dysfunction to one identified member), parentification triangle (routing marital tension through a child), and romantic jealousy triangulation (introducing a third interest to provoke jealousy).

The tension-export paradox is central: triangulation temporarily reduces tension in the original dyad by exporting it to the triangle, but the underlying conflict is unresolved and typically escalates while burdening the third party with tension not theirs. Nine formal propositions characterize Bowen's triangle, the five forms, tension export, gossip-triangulation dynamics, the child triangle, romantic jealousy, conflict resolution prevention, scapegoat function, and return paths through differentiation of self.
