// what this is
psychoanalysis usually needs another person — someone to catch what you can’t. this is the version you run alone, with a page and honest attention. the framework gives it structure so it doesn’t become rumination: a fixed vocabulary — ground state, displacement, cost, return — and a fixed order to move through them.
it is a lens for reflection. it is not therapy, diagnosis, or treatment, and it doesn’t replace them. the displacement framework is a personal working theory, published on zenodo, not peer-reviewed clinical science. use it as a way of thinking, not a verdict on yourself.
// one · name your ground state
your ground state is the configuration you rest in at least cost — the version of you that isn’t spending effort to hold a shape. it isn’t your best day or your ideal — it’s the baseline. plainly: when nothing is wrong, how do you actually feel and act?
write two or three lines. concrete, not aspirational. “i work in the morning, i’m slow to anger, i sleep through the night.” you need this first because you can’t measure a drift without the point it drifted from.
// two · notice the displacement
displacement is the distance between where you rest and where you are now. two questions: what’s off — and what’s the shape of it? not just “i feel bad,” but the geometry. is it a pull toward one thing, or away from another? a spike, or a slow lean you only see against the baseline?
name the shape as flatly as you can. “i’m avoiding the inbox.” “i pick fights on the days i skip the walk.” the shape is more useful than the feeling; you can act on a shape.
// three · count the cost of staying
holding a displacement is not free. it costs you something every day you keep it — attention, sleep, a relationship, hours. this step is the honest one: what is staying here costing you, concretely, today? not in theory. in your actual hours.
write the bill. “two hours of dread before i open the laptop.” “i’m short with people i love.” seeing the cost written down is often what moves you — not willpower, arithmetic. the cost of staying is what you weigh against the cost of the move back.
// four · trace the return path
the return path is the way back toward ground — and the useful question is which step is cheapest. not the whole distance at once. the single smallest real move that reduces the displacement. a fifteen-minute walk. one message sent. one thing named out loud.
“roads to safety” here means exactly this: return-to-ground. safety is not a place someone else takes you — it’s the direction that points home once you’re clear about where you are. the whole practice is internal grounding. clarity about your position is what points you back.
// the lineage, honestly
self-analysis isn’t new. freud analyzed his own dreams and resistances in the years around 1897, and treated that self-study as groundwork for the method. karen horney gave it a book — self-analysis, 1942 — arguing that a person can, with discipline, do real analytic work on their own.
horney was also clear about the limits, and it’s worth repeating hers: resistance is hardest to see in yourself. the very thing analysis is meant to surface is the thing you’re most motivated to keep hidden, and there’s no second person to catch the blind spot. so run this as a practice with edges. when the same knot won’t move, that’s often the signal to bring in another person — not a failure of the method, its honest boundary.
