Building with no blueprint. Each ant is more likely to grab a lone grain and more likely to drop its grain where grains already pile. From that one local rule, mounds and clearings rise — no foreman, no plan. The structure tells the next ant what to do.

it runs continuously — no rounds, no end. the readout counts ants, grains, and mounds (cells holding six or more grains); the word tracks the tallest pile: scattered under 8, gathering under 18, a town at 18 and up. tip: ants drop where density is already high, so two clicks on the same spot seed a pile that grows on its own.

- stigmergy. Pierre-Paul Grassé coined it in 1959 watching termites: "stimulation of workers by the performance they have achieved." The work already done is the instruction for the next move. (Grassé 1959)
- positive feedback builds. A grain is likelier to land where grains already sit, so heaps grow into pillars, arches and chambers — coordination with no message passed ant to ant. (Deneubourg; Theraulaz & Bonabeau)
- no central mind. The same clustering falls out of pure local sensing, no pheromone needed — a classic of decentralized thinking. (Resnick, Turtles, Termites, and Traffic Jams, 1994)
This is a schematic, not a real colony — it shows the rule, not termite biology. A cousin of the wire: both build by use, not by blueprint.
