the eddy

A dissipative structure, touchable. Turn up the flow and the field organizes into rolls — a standing pattern. Cut the flow and the pattern melts back to noise. The order you see is held open by the throughput, and paid for in entropy the box exports the whole time.

drag the flow slider — watch rolls appear as it rises, melt as it drops. click the field to feed the flow at a spot.

flow0.55

flow 0 — the ordering term vanishes; only mixing runs, and the pattern relaxes to uniform.

// order — how locked into rolls the field is

0.00

0 disordered · 1 fully structured. it rises while flow runs, falls when you cut it.

// total entropy exported — never falls

0.0 · +0.000/step

this counter never falls. it climbs faster exactly when flow is high and order is being held — holding the pattern is the cost.

seed 0 · same seed, same start — the flow is what differs

// the point

order appears only while energy flows through. cut the flow and it melts.

The order meter can rise — but only by pushing the total-entropy meter up faster. The pattern is rented from the flow, never owned. Watch the two together: every gain in order is bought, and the receipt is the counter that never falls.

// what this is

A toy of a dissipative structure — order sustained by throughput, in the spirit of Prigogine's work on non-equilibrium thermodynamics (dissipative structures) and Schrödinger's What Is Life? (1944). Bénard convection is the classic real example: heat a fluid layer from below and, past a threshold, it self-organizes into rolls that persist only while the heat flows. This page makes that idiom touchable. It is a simulation, not a measurement, and it models no emotion. The second law is not violated here — the local order is bought with a larger global entropy increase, which the total-entropy meter is the ledger for.

// on the metaphor

One reading treats love, and living order generally, as a class of bonding process — structure that a body or a bond holds open only while energy keeps flowing through it. That is a proposal, a metaphor made precise through established non-equilibrium thermodynamics and evolutionary biology, not a physical law about the emotion. Love does not violate the second law; there is no energy-of-emotion, no vibration or frequency at work, no consciousness ordering the universe. Displacement and ground state are terms from the framework's published papers — referenced here, not redefined; the dissipative-ground reading is a proposal.
