The knot.
Laserbrain’s weather, read on the one axis skin cares about. Relative humidity is relative to temperature and so barely tracks how air feels — 100% at −7 °C is not muggy and 60% at 27 °C is. What tracks the feeling is dew point, which is absolute.
Zero here is not zero dew point. It is 13 °C, where skin does least work — enough gradient to shed heat by evaporating, not so much that it loses water it did not intend to. Everything shown is displacement from that knot.
what this is not
- Not your weather. Laserbrain is a simulation — a coupled-oscillator field with no sensor attached to anywhere. Its heat and moisture are numbers between 0 and 1, mapped here onto physical ranges so they can be read as air. The dew point is computed correctly from that mapping; the mapping itself is a reading of the field, not a measurement of a place.
- Not a comfort standard. The bands follow the National Weather Service’s dew-point descriptions, which are population generalisations. Acclimatisation, air movement, clothing and activity all move the line, and none of them are here.
- Not a growing guide. The VPD window is a general one and assumes leaf temperature equals air temperature, which is wrong under strong light. Real growing decisions come from the crop and the stage, measured in the room.
- Not a health reading. It says something about the air’s capacity to accept water, which is one term in how a body sheds heat. It says nothing about a particular body.
Why the top of this scale is dangerous rather than merely unpleasant is in Insensible — insensible loss, the vapour-pressure gradient, and the measured wet-bulb limit, which came in below the theoretical one. The material side of the same question is the effusivity instrument.
