the settling
A displaced system returning to its ground state. Shove it; watch it come back. The manner of return is set by one number — the damping ratio ζ.

Red is the current ζ. The faint green ghost is the ζ=1 return, held for comparison — the fastest return to ground with no overshoot, the mark every other ζ falls short of.
// the one number
under ζ=1 it overshoots and rings. at ζ=1 it returns fastest, clean. over ζ=1 it crawls back with no overshoot.
// what this is
The settling is an idealized linear second-order system — a damped harmonic oscillator, x'' + 2ζω₀x' + ω₀²x = 0. Displace it and it returns to ground, and the damping ratio ζ decides how. Critical damping, ζ=1, is the fastest return to ground without overshoot — a textbook result of classical mechanics. In the mass-spring form that is c = 2√(km): the exact damping where two decay rates meet. Real systems are messier — nonlinear, noisy, coupled. This is the clean skeleton, and it models nothing clinical. laserbrain runs on the same drift-then-return principle; this canvas is not the hub, only the bare mechanism drawn plainly.
