Darwin's Memecoins

Rincón, D., with Claude · phronesis · 2026 · which survive, and how

~97% of memecoins go extinct. A handful live for years. This is the evolutionary anatomy of that gap — what selection actually rewards, and the shapes a coin's life takes. A companion to the Cultural Evolution of AI study. It describes an ecology; it is not a trading guide, and the difference matters.

What survives — and how

A memecoin has no use-value to select on, so selection runs on one thing: transmission. The survivors share a short list of traits, none of which is "good fundamentals":

Selection here is on attention, not value. The survivor is the one that kept the loop alive after the pump.

The life cycle, in six shapes

The complete life of a coin tends to fall into one of a few curves — time across, attention (and price) up:

flash
one blip, then nothing. most coins.
pump & die
one arch up, then to zero.
rug
rise, then a vertical drop. predation.
survivor
keeps oscillating, never hits zero.
slow bleed
a peak, then a long decay.
phoenix
dies, then a second wave revives it.

The shape that matters is the amber one. The dead are single waves that decay to nothing; the survivor is the one that keeps oscillating — recurring waves of attention around a floor that never reaches zero. Death is decay. Life is sustained oscillation. That is the whole Darwinian story in one picture.

The sine caveat

Anything can be drawn as a sine. Fourier proved it: any curve at all is a sum of sine waves. So a sine "model" of a coin's life isn't evidence of a law — it's a description that would fit any data you fed it. These six shapes are schematics for intuition, not proofs. The sine that explains everything explains nothing. The only hard datum here is the extinction rate — ~97% — and that needs no curve at all.

This is the same trap the rest of this work keeps naming: a beautiful model laid over noise, mistaken for the noise having a structure. Use the curves to see; never to prove.

Why this is not a trading guide

Knowing what survivors had does not tell you what will survive. Survival is mostly luck and is only legible afterward; reading the traits forward is hindsight wearing a lab coat. And the actual fittest in this ecology aren't pattern-readers — they're sniper bots and insiders. So this gives you a clearer view of the graveyard, not an edge over it. It's natural history, not a stock tip.

A companion to the Cultural Evolution of AI study — dead = extinction (failed variation), rug = predation, survivor = sustained transmission.
