The claim under test
The apparatus is set out in Anxiety as the Signature of Displacement and is not re-derived here. A system has a ground state it costs least to occupy. Departures are measured by a displacement ξ, each displaced state carries an instantaneous cost, and the accumulated cost of a trajectory is the integral of that cost over time. To this the anxiety note adds one object the rest of the framework did not name: the return path, and its minimum cost Φ*, taken over every available route home.
The framework's central commitment is then a single inequality. Φ* < ∞. Displacement is reversible; what costs is holding it. Everything downstream leans on this. The anxiety note's whole result is that pathological anxiety is the systematic over-pricing of a reversible displacement — the internal estimate running away from a true cost that was always finite — and the clinical corollary, that corrective experience resolves it by demonstrating a reversibility the alarm had denied, only works if the reversibility is really there.
So the interesting question is not whether the claim is useful. It is where it stops being true.
Three notes, three different answers
Three notes on this site reach that boundary from different directions, and they do not agree.
Trauma leaves the path damaged and payable. This is the anxiety note's own case, and it is the easy one. The displacement may be severe and the route home expensive, but expensive is not closed. The distinction the note insists on is that trauma is not the magnitude of the displacement — a system can be flung very far and walk back cheaply. Trauma is damage to the route, and the route survives the damage.
Learning closes the reverse path and leaves a different door open. Knowledge Is Irreversible makes a sharper claim than it first appears to. You cannot reoccupy not-knowing on demand; the curse of knowledge and hindsight bias are the measured signatures. But the note's spine is the qualification: irreversible is not permanent. Knowledge decays, forgetting is real and lawful — and forgetting is not the inverse of learning. Ebbinghaus proved it with his own method: relearning a forgotten list is faster than learning it new, and those savings are detectable when explicit recall has fallen to zero. The person who forgot is not the person who never knew. They differ by exactly the trace the savings measure. So the reverse path is gone while an exit remains, and the exit does not run backwards along the road in.
A breached basement membrane closes it outright. Autodisplasia found the hard case, and found it in a physical object. A neoplasm confined above the basement membrane cannot reach blood or lymph and cannot seed elsewhere. Breach that sheet and the same lesion is invasive. Pathology treats the line as decisive, and the note's observation is that return cost here does not climb — it steps, at a sheet of matrix that is either intact or is not.
That last clause is tidier than the biology. The clinical line is genuinely sharp: breaching is what separates a lesion that is easily treatable from one that is highly lethal, and nothing below softens that. The mechanism is not a switch. Cancer-associated fibroblasts breach the membrane mechanically — pulling, stretching and softening it — and invasion can proceed without metalloproteases at all; blocking proteolysis reduces perforation size by only about two thirds rather than preventing it. So the membrane is a material being failed by degrees, not a seal that pops. What steps is the consequence, once the sheet is through: reachable blood and lymph, and a lesion that can seed. Keep the step where it belongs, at the outcome rather than at the material, and this case still does the work asked of it below. Stated at the material, it was overdrawn.
What the three have in common, and it is not distance
In none of the three cases does the return path close because the system went too far. The traumatised system may be very far out and still get back. The tumour in situ may be well advanced and still be returnable. The learner may have acquired a single fact and already be unable to unlearn it.
What varies with the outcome is something else. In each case the path closes exactly when the system loses the thing it was reading its own state against.
The cancer case says this almost explicitly, and it is why that note is the one that found the step. The basement membrane is not only the boundary whose breach defines invasion. It is the surround the cell reads itself against — Bissell's group reverted malignant cells in three-dimensional culture by blocking β1-integrin, the receptor through which a cell senses exactly that matrix, and the cells reassembled a basement membrane, re-established their junctions, and stopped growing with the genome untouched. One structure in both roles: the thing whose loss makes return unaffordable is the thing whose signal made return happen.
The learning case has the same shape without any physical object in it. To reoccupy not-knowing you would have to read your present state against the naive prior — and the naive prior is precisely what learning consumed. Fischhoff's result is this and nothing more: given the outcome, subjects could not recover the uncertainty they had held, and were unaware they could not. The second term is gone, so the reverse path is gone. Nothing was destroyed that you could point at.
And the trauma case fits by contrast, which is the useful direction. The return path is damaged but the surround survives. That is why corrective experience works at all: there is still something to read the displacement against, so the over-estimate remains correctable by measurement. Anxiety is the price of a route the system has not re-walked — and it can re-walk it.
Distance never closes a return path. Losing the surround does.
The boundary is not always physical
That is the direct answer to the question the cancer note left open, and it is a qualified no. The boundary was physical there because in that system the second term is a physical object — a sheet of matrix a cell touches. Where the second term is not an object, the closure is just as hard and there is nothing to point at. The naive prior is not made of anything, and it is no more recoverable than the membrane.
This is where the framework's other principle earns its place rather than sitting beside this one: nothing reads its own state except against a second term. Stated on its own it sounds like an epistemological nicety. Read against the return path it becomes the thing that decides whether getting back is possible, which is a much heavier load for it to carry.
The different door
If this is right, the practical consequence is not to work harder at the reverse path. It is to stop attempting the reverse path and restore or substitute the second term instead.
Both of the closed cases already contain an instance, and neither was described that way. Bissell's reversion did not repair a single mutation. The cells were, in the cancer note's vocabulary, conditioned permanently and malignant conditionally — history intact, expression decided by the surround, and the surround was what got changed. Ebbinghaus's savings are the same structure: what was learned is not unlearned and cannot be, but the state is left by a different door, and what remains is measurable precisely as the difference between the person who forgot and the person who never knew.
Those two notes are filed under different principles on this site and neither cites the other. They are describing one thing. Conditioned versus conditional is learned versus recalled. In both, history is permanent and expression is conditional on what the system is currently reading itself against — which is why in both, the way out is never backwards.
What would make this false
A return path that closes with the second term intact. That is the whole of it, and it is worth stating that plainly because the claim is otherwise in real danger of being unfalsifiable.
The danger is specific. "The second term" is not operationalised anywhere — not here, not in the note that introduced it. Nothing on this site measures one. So after any closed path is found, a second term can be nominated retrospectively and the claim will appear to hold. That is the failure mode the cancer note warned about in its own case: a mapping is cheap, and becomes worth something only when it produces a claim that could be false. This note is one step better than a mapping and not two — it makes a claim that could be false, and does not yet supply the measurement that would test it.
One case does cut the other way and is worth keeping visible. The wet-bulb limit in Insensible closes the last cooling route a warm body has, and closes nothing permanently: saturate the air and evaporation stops, dry the air and it resumes at once. Nothing is destroyed and the cost climbs rather than stepping. That is consistent with the claim, but it is consistent by being a non-case — an example of a path staying open, which is weak evidence. The knot reads that gradient live, and its thresholds are conventions placed on a continuum; nothing changes state at any of them. The contrast with a sheet that is either intact or not is the point, and one continuous case does not establish the general rule.
The limits, plainly
- Nothing here is derived. The formalism is the anxiety note's, the reversion result is Bissell's, the savings are Ebbinghaus's, and the basement-membrane observation is already in the cancer note. What this note adds is that the three are the same structure, which is a reading and not a result.
- The reversion experiment is one system — human breast cells in three-dimensional culture — and the organisational account of cancer it supports is a minority position that remains contested. The cancer note says so at greater length and that qualification carries here undiminished.
- "Second term" is doing more work in this note than it has ever been asked to do, and it is not measured. Until it is, this is a well-shaped conjecture.
- Three cases chosen from one site's own notes are not a sample. They were selected because they were to hand, which is the condition under which patterns are easiest to see and least trustworthy.
- The membrane case was first written here as a sheet that is either intact or not, which overstated it: the breach is mechanical and graded even though its consequence is not. The step survives at the outcome and not at the material, and a claim that had to be moved once to stay true should be treated as the weakest of the three.
- Nothing here is medical information, and nothing in it should influence any decision about screening, diagnosis or treatment. The cancer note states this at length and it is repeated rather than assumed.
