Principles.

Each is a claim that could be wrong. Under each is the work that argues for it — every note free to read in full, most of them taking a claim from outside literature, granting its true kernel, and correcting where it over-reaches. There is no target number here. The list is as long as the work has made it, and it grows when something is actually argued rather than to reach a round figure.

These sat under topic labels until now — which told you where a piece had been filed, not what it asserted. A label cannot be argued with. A principle can, and a few of these read as weaker once stated plainly. That is the point of stating them.

What the Site Became

A working note on phronesis.world’s own shape — a studio of about forty short papers and thirty instruments, each built by granting a compressed claim its true kernel and correcting one over-reach. What that practice is, from the inside.

    Nothing reads its own state except against a second term.

    There is no proprioception in a void. A reading needs something to be read against — another vantage point, another moment, a surround.

    Coherence Is the Second Term
    The surround principle sharpened to an identity: coherence is the second eigenvalue of the Laplacian, and the first is always zero — the structureless ground. Two is the floor; below it there is only displacement. Displacement is monadic, coherence is dyadic, and the relation is not the sum of its terms. Nearly alone among the site’s claims, this one is the framework’s own rather than a field’s re-description.
    Computer, Referee
    The principle raised from readings to roles: nothing holds a role except against a practice, either. Neither word ever named a substance — a computer was a job people held for three centuries, and a referee is literally the one to whom a matter is referred, a position in a relation rather than a description of anybody. Granting that without a bound is where it goes wrong: Putnam and Searle proved rather than suggested that on unlimited fluidity the wall computes and the word picks out nothing. What bounds it is the game. And because the office is conferred by the practice rather than the occupant, it can stand empty — which is the sharper reading of money as the sport with no referee.
    Perception, Minus the Narrator
    Perception is proprioception minus introspection — registration with the narrator subtracted. Gibson’s coperception; the Müller-Lyer stays bent even measured equal.
    Three Parallaxes
    Parallax recovers a collapsed dimension by comparing two vantage points across a known baseline — run it in space, in time, and once more.
    Any Psychological Event Is Internal
    The event occurs in the person; the world only supplies the occasion — stated carefully, without over-claiming what "internal" excludes.

    A system approaching a tipping point returns more slowly.

    Recovery time is a reading you can take before the tip, which makes it one of the few early warnings that generalises across domains.

    The same stressor is the training and the injury. What separates them is dose and recovery, not kind.

    The Dose Window

    One Air, Two Appetites
    The window principle arriving in a machine room, where the same quantity is necessary and destructive and only dose separates them. ASHRAE puts data equipment between 5.5 and 15 °C dew point and under 60% humidity, and the two edges fail by different mechanisms — static discharge below, condensation and corrosion above — so it is a genuine envelope rather than a ceiling. Planting really does cool, by tens of degrees at the surface. But vapor pressure deficit measures evaporation from a wet surface, which is the leaf’s question and not the circuit board’s, and the two appetites are opposed: what keeps moss alive is what corrodes hardware. They agree about heat and disagree entirely about water, which gives the rule — couple the heat, decouple the water — and the limit, that a planted layer is a buffer and never a controller.
    Embodied Displacement
    Whether this law transfers from bodily load to mental load — and why it must not be bought with embodied cognition, which is in an open replication crisis. Sensorimotor cortex can be lesioned without impairing action verb processing. Activation, necessity and constitution are three claims, routinely collapsed into one.

    Displacement is reversible. What costs is holding it.

    The framework’s load-bearing claim. A system pushed off its ground state can return; the expense is in staying away, paid continuously for as long as it lasts.

    Anxiety as the Signature of Displacement
    Trauma modeled as a severe but reversible displacement from ground state — an event that doesn’t move the system irrecoverably far.
    Peace Is the Attractor
    A second pass at the same claim: conflict is held against a gradient and must be paid for continuously; peace costs nothing to hold, so it’s the cheap state.
    Peace Prevails, Not Always
    Sustained conflict is a held displacement — it costs continuously to maintain. Rationalist theory shows war is inefficient ex post.
    Fair Medicine
    The displacement framework applied to drug pricing: health is the ground state, disease the displacement, treatment the work. A fair system charges for the work.
    Autodisplasia
    Cancer as displacement, and a coinage cut from five words to one. It lands on real ground — tissue organization field theory, and Bissell reverting malignant cells by blocking one receptor with the genome untouched. Return cost here steps at a physical boundary: the basement membrane, which is both the sheet whose breach defines invasion and the surround a cell reads itself against.
    Autonomic Displasia
    The one place the framework’s return cost stops being a metaphor. The autonomic nervous system is a displacement-and-return machine, and heart rate variability measures the return directly — while critical slowing down in day-to-day affect is a validated forecast of depression onset. The vocabulary unifies anxiety, recovery time and vagal tone into one measurable axis; what it still owes is a cross-diagnostic prediction the separate fields don’t already make.
    Every Six Months Is Not a Series
    Whether the frontier overturns Autodisplasia’s admission, and why it does not. Dynamical network biomarkers do find a critical state in cancer — but in cross-sectional cohorts already sorted by TNM stage, scored retrospectively, peaking at the stage before metastasis, which the pathologist has already written down. To act on it you must first know the thing it tells you. The real asymmetry with the autonomic case is not biology but sampling rate: HRV is continuous and ctDNA is drawn three or four times a year, and a rolling window needs twenty points. The general claim, checkable and offered to be broken: a domain admits this framework’s number exactly when its return signal can be sampled faster than the system moves.
    Genotype Cannot Be Raised by a Tumour
    Resting heart rate predicts cancer mortality, and the meta-analysis authors say plainly they cannot tell whether it is a marker of subclinical disease or a cause — observational data cannot separate those, because a tumour can raise a heart rate. Mendelian randomisation can: genotype is fixed at conception and reverse causation is structurally unavailable. The instrument existed, 493 variants across 835,465 people, and had been pointed at cardiomyopathy and stroke but never at cancer. Run here on 278 instruments against 76,192 breast cancer cases: OR 1.115 per 10 bpm, three estimators agreeing to three decimals, no directional pleiotropy — landing almost on the observational 1.13. The confidence interval is too narrow and the note says why: instruments were pruned by distance rather than clumped against an LD panel. A first pass worth checking properly, not a settled result.
    A Confluence, Not a Source
    The framework grading itself after a night of testing against real literatures. The honest verdict, visible only across all the notes: a strong unifier with one instrument (HRV), one confirmed prediction (the diagnostic category is not the unit, agreed by a formalism, a pulse and a gut flora), one real oncology direction (mechanical over genetic), and no scoop — the place live fields meet, not the source of any. Names the one study that would move the grade.
    The Cost Falls on the Displaced
    The principle applied to two systems instead of one, and followed to the end. A displacer pays once, for doing; the displaced pays continuously, for being held — an asymmetry with no term that returns the cost to its origin. Killing turns out not to be the top of the scale but a different kind of thing: it does not raise the return cost, it removes the term that would pay it. The derivation is honest about the one place it cannot go — no set of descriptive premises yields an imperative, so the normative premise is added in the open rather than smuggled in a verb. What survives is conditional and sharper for it: the framework does not tell you to accept that premise, only that if you already have, its one measured instrument leaves nowhere principled to stop short of animals.
    The Field and the Fridge
    The clearest case of the principle on the site, because you can watch the sign flip. A lettuce leaf wants mild dryness while it grows — VPD around 0.8–1.2 kPa — because the water it loses is the pull that draws calcium up to its tips, so the loss is the work; too still and saturated and the tips starve, which is tip burn. Cut, the same leaf wants near-saturation and cold, because it is still losing water and no longer replacing it. Harvest does not change the leaf’s physics; it removes the root, and the root was the return path. Rooted, transpiration is a displacement reversed for free. Severed, the identical flux becomes a one-way loss that accumulates — a reversible loop turned into a held debt by cutting the one term the leaf read its water against.
    The Return Path
    Where this principle stops holding. Trauma leaves the route home damaged but payable, learning closes it while leaving a different door, a breached basement membrane closes it outright — and in none of the three does distance decide. What closes a return path is losing the second term the system reads itself against, which is why the boundary is physical only when that term is.
    Engineering Therapy
    Therapy’s process can be engineered — outcome measurement, protocolized treatment, relapse planning, all cited practice. The alliance is the part that resists.

    Entropy is in the description, not in the system.

    It is a number your account of a thing assigns to it, not a substance the thing contains.

    Local order is rented, never owned.

    Every pocket of structure is paid for by a larger disorder somewhere else. Nothing here breaks the second law; things only look like they do from inside.

    Circulation increases circulation — until it saturates or collapses.

    Positive feedback: the carrier feeds the flow that carries it. Real and general — a spark, the bloodstream, a bond — but it never runs free. Every self-amplifying loop pays for its amplification with a ceiling or a crash.

    Temperature is in the variance, not the level.

    A steady reading says nothing about heat. What carries the temperature is the size of the jitter around it.

    Anything warm and wet, in unsaturated air, is losing water — and that loss is the cooling.

    No glands required. And the driver is the vapour-pressure gradient rather than the warmth, which is why humid heat kills where dry heat does not.

    Some outcomes arrive only by happening.

    The rule can be fully known and the result still unavailable in advance. Running it is not a failure to find the shortcut; it is the only route there is.

    Kinds of Un-shortcuttability
    Weather, development, quantum measurement, meaning, mind all feel like one thing: the rule is knowable but the outcome only comes by happening.
    Coherence and Irreducibility
    Two motions run under everything: systems settle into coherence, largely predictably; and systems are irreducible — the running has to happen to be known.
    Sports, the Present Sold
    Sport is the one thing a culture builds whose entire value is that it can’t be computed in advance — deterministic underneath, irreducible to predict.
    Money, the Sport with No Referee
    Making money shares sport’s structure — irreducible, un-shortcuttable, played in real time and scored — and lacks sport’s two saving graces.
    Cognitive Displacement
    Cognition has a lower bound the way physics has a Planck scale — a minimum unit of meaning below which concepts can’t be held directly, only simulated.

    Learning is one-way.

    You cannot return to not-knowing on demand, which is why the expert is the worst available judge of what the beginner sees.

    Composition is not commutative, and every interface filters.

    Order of operations changes the result, and something is always lost at each handoff. As true of a workflow as of a function.

    Chain Design
    A chain is practices composed in sequence. Order matters — composition isn’t commutative — and interfaces filter what passes stage to stage.
    The Green Window
    The filtering claim in optics, where the loss is spectral rather than quantitative. Pipe sunlight down plastic fibre and green survives best — about 90 dB/km against 155 for red — so what arrives at the far end is green-shifted. For almost any plant that is the wavelength it evolved to bounce, which is why leaves look green at all. Shade mosses are the exception and photosynthesise beyond their respiratory demands on green alone, because green is what a closed canopy leaves them. Two unrelated spectra landing on one window, neither aware of the other. The correction is that light was never the binding constraint: moss is limited by water, the collector wants a clear sky, and cheap LEDs have beaten this idea before.
    When Thought Becomes Artificial
    Synthetic thought is AI, granted — but that’s mostly a definition unpacked. A practice becomes artificial not simply by being cognitive.

    The same hierarchy runs differently depending on which direction the authority flows from. Five separate literatures converge on it.

    Devolution
    Let the world watch; let only the room steer. Looking takes nothing and can be open to everyone; touching changes a shared world.
    The Smart Loom
    Computing began as weaving — Jacquard’s punch card became Babbage’s program, and Lovelace said so outright. Every machine that takes a card and acts is a loom, which makes the real question who owns the card: the factory’s loom read the factory’s, and a large model reads frozen weights and writes none. This one hands the card back, on parts that are humble and proven — gravity tensioning the warp the way the warp-weighted loom has for 6,000 years. Authority over what gets made, devolved to the hand that turns it.

    The convenience of cryptocurrency granted in full, with receipts: permissionless, borderless, fast, final. The correction: the convenience and the danger are one property.
    Darwin’s Memecoins
    A coin with no use-value leaves selection nothing to run on but transmission — a remixable meme, a crowd that outlasts the launch spike, depth, canonical status, and mostly luck, said plainly. The dead are single waves decaying to nothing; the survivor keeps oscillating around a floor. Its own caveat is the sharp part: any curve at all is a sum of sines, so the six life-shapes are schematics for intuition and not evidence of a law. The one hard datum is the ~97% extinction rate, which needs no curve.
    X, as an Art Showcase
    A direct-to-audience venue where the gate did not get easier to pass but stopped existing — images inline at full width, and a quote-retweet cascade that can put one drawing past more eyes in six hours than a gallery show sees in its run. Granted as a real venue, then dated: since the 2022–23 change the ranking weights engagement and paid verification, so who surfaces is a different question from who posts.

    A body stores oscillators, not shapes.

    Form falls out of phases and frequencies rather than being held as a template. The turn is the primitive; the shape is what the turning leaves behind.
